Pathology (from Greek pathos, feeling, pain, suffering; and logos, study of; see also –ology) is the study of the processes underlying disease and other forms of illness, harmful abnormality, or dysfunction. Within biology, it means specifically the study of the structural and functional changes in cells, tissues and organs that underlie disease.

The laboratory is considered to be the backbone of the hospital as final diagnosis of the patient is arrived at by carrying out several investigations including pathology. The services provided at our pathology laboratory includes Clinical Pathology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Cytology, Serology, Haemtology and others.  Microbiology (in Greek micron = small and biologia = studying life) is the study of microorganisms, including viruses, viroids, prions, prokaryotes and simple eukaryotes (e.g. molds and fungi).  The Central Steam Sterilisation and  Autoclave Department (CSSD) also comes under the sub-discipline Microbiology of  Pathology department. All items including surgical instruments, culture of operation theatres, patient rooms, wards, passage, furniture, electric installation and others are routinely checked before and after sterilisation / fumigation to ensure an infection free environment. Cytology usually refers to – Cell biology, the study of cell anatomy and function  and Cytopathology, the cellular diagnostics of disease.

Biochemistry also known as Chemical pathology is the area of pathology that is generally concerned with analysis of bodily fluids. The laboratory is highly automated and uses assays that are closely monitored and quality controlled. The tests done include - General or routine chemistry, Endocrinology to do with hormones, Immunology to do with the study of the immune system and antibodies and Pharmacology or Toxicology to do with the study of drugs.

Flow cytometry is a technique for counting, examining and sorting microscopic particles suspended in a stream of fluid. It allows simultaneous multiparametric analysis of the physical and/or chemical characteristics of single cells flowing through an optical/electronic detection apparatus.. The laboratory has Beckman-Coulter (ex-Coulter) to conduct such investigations.

Hematology is the branch of medicine that is concerned with blood, the blood-forming organs and its disorders. It is commonly divided into three sub-areas, according to the type and group of cells it refers to. – study of Red blood cells, White blood cells and Platelets. The  Common tests used in the investigation of haematological problems include: full blood counts, blood films, bone marrow biopsies  and others. Treatments include - Medication, Blood transfusion (for anemia) , Venesection, Chemotherapy (e.g. for leukemia)  and Radiotherapy (in decline, e.g. for leukemia)

Nearly all investigations are conducted in our laboratory by state of art equipment of international repute with strict quality control. Such tests are done by highly educated and experienced professionals. The Institute also runs postgraduate professional course training of Microbiology Lab Technicians (MLT) for students holding BSc (Microbiology) degree, since more than a decade. The students trained here have been employed in various labs in India and abroad and the education imparted at our lab has been appreciated by one and all.
