Emergency Medicine department or the Casualty is located on the ground floor of the hospitals. It is prepared at all hours to meet all types of medical emergencies be it myocardial infarctions ("heart attacks"), serious motor vehicle accidents or other trauma or poly-trauma and other such life-threatening conditions. Being located within the hospital, this center is positioned to provide ready access to major surgeries and critical care units. The ward is always manned by a Casual Medical Officer (CMO) - Doctor & Nurse especially trained in emergency and the department is equipped with state of art equipment including Patient Monitoring Systems, ECG, Defibrillators, Ventilators, Oxygen and Suction lines and other required equipment and instruments. The department is adjacent to dressing and plaster’s theatre and is capable to meet emergency requirements in case of accident or major poly-trauma. The hospitals is a member of the Emergency Medical System (EMS) wherein all hospitals including Government, Municipality and private hospitals of Ahmedabad city have evolved a common strategy for providing emergency medical care. On call to a Central Control Room, the nearest Ambulance transfers the patient to hospital thus saving vital time in transfer of patient. Intensive Care Medicine or critical care medicine is concerned with providing greater than ordinary medical care and observation to people in a critical or unstable condition. People requiring intensive care include those after major surgery, with severe head trauma, life-threatening acute illness, respiratory insufficiency, coma, haemodynamic insufficiency, severe fluid imbalance or with the failure of one or more of the major organ systems (life-critical systems or others). It is generally the most expensive, high technology and resource intensive area of medical care. Intensive care usually takes a system-by-system approach to treatment. The nine key systems (alphabetically) – cardiovascular system, central nervous system endocrine system, gastro-intestinal tract (and nutritional condition), hematology, microbiology (including sepsis status), peripheries (and skin), renal (and metabolic) and respiratory system. The provision of intensive care is administered in a specialized unit of our hospital called the Critical Care Unit (CCU). There are separate intensive care units for cardiothoracic patients - Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Neo Natal Intensive Care Unit, Post Surgical Ward for intensive care of patients after surgery and Post Angio-ward for care of patients undergoing Cardio Vascular Catheterisation procedures. All intensive care units of the hospitals are equipped with latest or state of art medical equipments to support the organs and the treatment. These include Patient (including cardiac parameters) monitors equipment for the constant monitoring of bodily functions, Ventilators to assist breathing through an endotracheal tube or a tracheotomy opening, Central Oxygen and Central Suction line, Defibrillators, Mobile X-Ray unit, Mobile Sonography unit, Mobile Dialysis unit, Mobile Echo Color Doppler, ECG, Syringe pumps for pre-defined definite intake of medicines, a web of intravenous lines, feeding tubes, nasogastric tubes, suction pumps, drains and catheters; and a wide array of drugs to treat the main condition(s), induce sedation, reduce pain & prevent secondary infections and others. Intensivists provide the intensive care to patient. These are specialists, qualified & having degree in Critical Care, certified by Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine. They are responsible for treatment of life threatening diseases & disorders and of training of staff and establish protocols in the Critical Care Unit (CCU). In addition to these intensivists, Post Graduate Doctors’ including Pulmonologists, Anesthetists, Medical Officers, trained nurses and other para-medical staff provide the critical care at all hours. The department works in close co-ordination with Physiotherapy, Pathology, Radiology and other investigation, medicine and surgery disciplines. |
