Head and neck cancer surgery |
Otolaryngology is the branch of medicine that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of ear, nose, throat, and head & neck disorders. The full name of the specialty is otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. Practitioners are called otolaryngologists-head and neck surgeons, or sometimes otorhinolaryngologists (ORL) or ENT (ear nose and throat) surgeons. The throat is the part of the neck anterior to the vertebral column. It consists of the pharynx and larynx and various blood vessels, various pharyngeal muscles, the trachea (windpipe) and the esophagus. A nose is a protuberance in vertebrates that houses the nostrils, or nares, which admit and expel air for respiration. The ear is located on each side of the head - the outer ear includes the eardrum, the ear lobes at the bottom, the helix is the outer edge of the outer ear, the middle ear includes the ossicles (three tiny bones), two muscle tendons (of the stapedius and tensor tympani muscles), and two nerve bundles (the horizontal portion of the facial nerve and a branch of the facial nerve called the chorda tympani) The middle ear is hollow. The inner ear comprises both the organ of hearing (the cochlea) and the labyrinth or vestibular apparatus, the organ of balance located in the inner ear that consists of three semicircular canals and the vestibule. The hospital provides treatment to all ear, Nose and Throat diseases and disorders and includes micro surgeries of ear & Layrnx, Rhinoplasty, functional Endo Nasal, Sinus Surgery (FESS), Fibreoptic Laryingo Pharyngoscopy and others. Recently the department has also started the Cochlear Implant surgery wherein internal hearing aid is implanted in the case of deaf and dumb children. The surgery provides hearing capabilities to the deaf children who then lead a normal life. In Person with acquired deafness after development of speech (post verbal), this has excellent results. The hospital also provides the facilities of audiology and speech therapy. Audiology is the branch of science that studies hearing, balance, and their disorders. Its practitioners, who study hearing and treat those with hearing losses, are audiologists. Employing various testing strategies (e.g. Audiogram, Impedence Audiometry, BERA ), audiology aims to determine whether someone can hear within the normal range, and if not, which portions of hearing (high, middle, or low frequencies) are affected and to what degree. If an audiologist diagnosis a hearing loss, he or she will provide recommendations to a patient as to what options (e.g. miidle ear surgery, hearing aids, cochlear implants, surgery, appropriate medical referrals) may be of assistance. Speech therapy is the corrective or rehabilitative treatment of physical and/or congenital deficits/disorders resulting in difficulty with verbal communication. Depending on the nature and severity of the disorder, common treatments may range from physical strengthening exercises, instructive or repetitive practice and drilling, to the use of audio-visual aids. Speech and language therapy is provided to children and adults who have difficulties with communication, or with eating, drinking and swallowing, language delay , specific language impairment , specific difficulties in producing sounds, hearing impairment, cleft palate, stammering, communication problems following stroke, neurological impairments and degenerative conditions voice problems, mental health issues, learning difficulties, physical disabilities, stammering (dysfluency), hearing impairment . |
