Neurosurgery is the focused on treating those central and peripheral nervous system diseases amenable to mechanical intervention. It is a discipline of medicine and that specialty of surgery which provides the operative and non-operative management (i.e. prevention, diagnosis, evaluation, treatment, critical care, and rehabilitation) of disorders of the central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems, including their supporting structures and vascular supply; the evaluation and treatment of pathological processes that modify the function or activity of the nervous system, including the hypophysis: and the operative and non-operative management of pain. As such, neurological surgery encompasses the surgical, non-surgical and stereotactic radio-surgical treatment of adult and pediatric patients with disorders of the nervous system: disorders of the brain, meninges, skull base, and their blood supply, including the surgical and endovascular treatment of disorders of the intracranial and extracranial vasculature supplying the brain and spinal cord; disorders of the pituitary gland; disorders of the spinal cord, meninges, and vertebral column, including those that may require treatment by fusion, instrumentation or endovascular techniques; and disorders of the cranial and spinal nerves throughout their distribution. Neurosurgical conditions include primarily brain spinal cord and peripheral nerve disorders. Conditions treated at our hospitals, by the neurosurgeons include – Lumbar disc herniation, Cervical disc herniation Spinal stenosis Hydrocephalus Head trauma (brain hemorrhages, skull fractures, etc.), Spinal cord trauma, Traumatic injuries of peripheral nerves, Brain tumors,Tumors of the spine, spinal cord and peripheral nerves, Cerebral aneurysms, Some forms of hemorrhagic stroke, such as subarachnoid hemorrhages, as well as intraparenchymal and intraventricular hemorrhages, Some forms of pharmacologically non-responding epilepsy, Some forms of movement disorders (advanced Parkinson's disease, chorea ) this involves the use of specially developed minimally invasive stereotactic techniques (functional, stereotactic neurosurgery), Intractable pain of cancer or trauma patients and cranial/peripheral nerve pain, Some forms of intractable psychiatric> disorders and others, Malformations of the >nervous system, some forms of malformations of nervous system such as Meningomyelocele spinal fistula and others, some form of infection of spine, spinal and Meninges and others. To meet the intensive care requirements of emergency in poly – trauma cases including cases of head, spinal injuries, the hospital has a Critical Care Unit serviced round the clock by specialist intensivist. The unit is fully equipped to meet all kinds of eventualities. For transportation of patient in emergency the hospitals also provide ambulatory services. It is also a part of the city EMS – Emergency Medical Services. All types of laboratory and radiology investigations facilities are available including F.N.A.C., Frozen section and Paraffin section, Blood gas Analysis, Hormonal assay & others over and above the routine investigations. The radiology facilities include advanced C. T. Scanner, Digital X-Ray, Sonography, Angiography and others. For surgery the hospitals has a separate neuro-surgery operation theatre. The theatre is equipped with all the requisite equipment and instruments including Bipolar, Micro Drill, Operating Microscope, Head Frame, Craniotome, instruments for micro-neuro surgery and others. The department is also supported by advanced physiotherapy facilities with highly educated, trained and experienced staff including therapy for altered consciousness, Paraplegia, hemiplegia, spondylisis and others. All the service are available round the clock on all days. |
