Orthopedic surgery or orthopedics is the branch of surgery concerned with acute, chronic, traumatic , and recurrent injuries and other disorders of the musculoskeletal system , its muscular and bone parts. Apart from the mechanical considerations, it is also concerned with the pathology, genetics, intrinsic, extrinsic, and biomechanical factors involved Orthopedic surgeons treat patients using surgical and non-surgical methods to correct musculoskeletal problems.

Nicholas Andry coined the word "orthopedics", derived from Greek words for "correct" or "straight" ("orthos") and " child " ("paidion"), in 1741 , when at the age of 81 he published Orthopaedia: or the Art of Correcting and Preventing Deformities in Children. Jean-Andre Venel , considered by some to be the father of orthopedics or first true orthopedist, established the first orthopedic institute in 1780 . Since then the discipline has developed a lot. 

At Rajasthan Hospitals, nearly all types of treatments under the discipline are available. It includes the general management inclusive of trauma care, fractures and dislocation of bones and joints and various other diseases like congenital infections including T.B., metabolic, hormonal, growth disorders, deformities, malignancy and others. Bone cancer patients are also treated with tumor prosthesis e.g. Care of osteosacoma, Erwings Sarcoma, GCT and others. We remove tumor & replace these by custom made prosthesis. The super specialty services being provided by the hospitals in this discipline includes joint replacement, spine diseases, arthroscopy and pediatric orthopedics.

Treatment for all kinds of spinal problems including accidental trauma, tumor, Tb and other infection, Disc Prolapse, Scoloisis, Birth defect and others are  being treated on regular basis, with latest technique at our hospitals.

The available treatments includes – Joint replacement, a super specialty of the discipline. We perform, apart from the routine knee and other joint replacements, a special kind of hip and knee replacement which are bone pressing and allows full range of motion in which patient can sit on the floor and squat also. Another kind of replacement, surface replacement of hip is a unique surgery which is performed by our department only. We regularly perform revision surgery of hip and knee. The department also regularly conducts shoulder and elbow surgery, commonly done after trauma. These include vascular injuries with management for limbs severed, due to accidents.

The treatment is provided in a modern department equipped with state of art equipment and instruments including Laminar Air Flow operation theatre which makes it bacteria free and thus lessens the chances  of infections, I.I.TV and other surgical equipment and instruments. Apart from the minor procedures, on an average 5 – 7 major surgeries are performed per day in the orthopedic operation theatre. The department works in close co-ordination with physical therapist or physiotherapists and occupational Therapists.
