Pulmonology (aka pneumology) is the specialty that deals with diseases of the lungs and the respiratory tract. It is called chest medicine and respiratory medicine in some countries and areas. Pulmonology is generally considered a branch of internal medicine, although it is closely related to intensive care medicine when dealing with patients requiring mechanical ventilation. Surgery of the respiratory tract is generally performed by specialists in Cardiothoracic surgery (or thoracic surgery). Chest medicine is not a specialty in itself but is an inclusive term which pertains to the treatment of diseases of the chest and contains the fields of pulmonology, thoracic surgery, and intensive care medicine. Pulmonology is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of lung diseases, as well as secondary prevention (tuberculosis).

Diseases managed by the pulmonologist include Asthma, Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,  Cystic fibrosis (adults), Lung cancer diagnosis, Pneumoconiosis, Pneumonia, Pneumothorax, Psittacosis, Pulmonary embolism, Pulmonary fibrosis, Pulmonary hypertension,  Pulmonary sequestration, Sarcoidosis, Sleep apnea or restless legs syndrome

The risk factors or cause of such diseases may be due hereditary affecting the lungs (cystic fibrosis, alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency) or exposure to toxins (tobacco smoke, asbestos, exhaust fumes, coal mining fumes)  or exposure to infectious agents (certain types of birds, malt processing) or an autoimmune diathesis that might predispose to certain conditions (pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension)  or other reasons.

The hospital has specialists to provide treatment in such diseases and disorders of lungs and respiratory tract.  The discipline is supported by Laboratory for investigation of blood (blood tests)such as arterial blood gas measurements, cardiac profile and others, Spirometry (the determination of lung volumes in time by breathing into a dedicated machine; response to bronchodilatators and diffusion of carbon monoxide), Bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), biopsy and epithelial brushing, Chest (digital)  X-rays, (spiral) CT scanning and others. To provide emergency services the hospitals has a separate emergency (Casualty) ward. The critically ill patients are provided treatment in Critical Care Unit (CCU). The CCU is connected by central oxygen and suction line and is equipped with all other required medical equipment including ventilators, defibrillators, (central) patient monitoring systems, syringe pumps, infusion pumps, inrta aortic balloon pump and others.

Surgical treatment, wherever required is performed by the (cardio)thoracic surgeon. Oxygen therapy is often necessary in severe respiratory disease (emphysema and pulmonary fibrosis). When this is insufficient, the patient might require mechanical ventilation.

The treatment is provided by highly educated and trained professionals. The trust has an “Air Polution related disease diagnostic centre’ in collaboration with GAIL. It also has a tuberclosis (TB) diagnostic and treatment center in collaboration with WHO.
